DALET BRIO MAKES ITS DEBUT

Advanced ingest/output technology leverages IT-based hardware adding highly flexible and cost effective mass content ingest and delivery capabilities to Dalet enterprise MAM solutions

Dalet Digital System, one of the leading developers of enterprise Media Asset Management (MAM) solutions for News, Sports and Programming, has announced Dalet Brio, an innovative IT-based input and output video platform. Fully integrated with Dalet Enterprise Edition, the company's all-in-one newsroom, automation and media management solution, Dalet Brio records media in a range of formats and resolutions; performs necessary conversions; stores it either locally or on a central SAN; and then plays it out, again in a range of formats and resolutions.

"Dalet Brio is the first product to roll out from our acquisition of Gruppo TNT," says David Lasry, Dalet's CEO. "Developed on a proven technology, Brio adds yet another dimension to the extensive Dalet MAM capabilities. It supports our commitment to offering open, fully integrated IT-based solutions that facilitate large-scale multimedia production and 360° delivery."
Developed on advanced IT-based technology, Brio brings a mature and feature-rich set of capabilities to Dalet Enterprise Edition. Flexible software codecs allow a transparent mix of HD and SD video in multiple formats, with built-in processes for down- and up-conversion. The flexibility drastically eases the transition from SD to HD. Local and centralized storage can be configured to suit a range of requirements. Built-in channel branding and graphic tools are also included. "At Mediaset, we have been using the technology developed by Gruppo TNT for more than 5 years," says Mauro Cassanmagnago, Deputy General Manager – Department of Research & Engineering Director of Videotime S.p.A. - Mediaset Group. "Five years ago we did an extensive search on the market for a system that could give us the flexibility to effectively manage diverse digital formats and content for our sports, playout and entertainment departments. The solution offered by Gruppo TNT turned out to be the most open and adaptable to meet our constantly growing needs. Since then we used the same open IT technology in many different areas. Now there are more than 80 servers in place - including playout, QC, HD studios production, and highly innovative disaster recovery. Now again its flexibility will play an important role in the new Newsroom project."

The open architecture and IT-based hardware allows Dalet Brio to scale up to manage many simultaneous feeds and playout channels. In a MAM workflow, it can be used for mass ingest, QC, and disaster recovery playout. In a newsroom setting, Dalet Brio along with Dalet Ingest and OnAir tools provides feed ingest capabilities coupled with reliable and cost-effective playout for newscast or 24/7 news wheels. Dalet Brio can also extend the port count at existing Dalet systems, in combination with existing supported servers.

COMCAST SPORTSNET MID-ATLANTIC UPGRADES TO HD STUDIO PRODUCTION WITH FUJINON ZA SELECT SERIES LENSES

Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic completed a comprehensive high definition upgrade and expansion of its news and studio facilities in Bethesda, Md., in August. As part of the upgrade, its studio now features four Sony HXC-100K HD cameras paired with Fujinon ZA17X7.6BERM 2/3-inch HD lenses and Fujinon MS-11D manual focus/servo zoom rear control kits.

The network delivers more than 500 live sporting events per year – plus news, analysis, and entertainment programming – to more than 4.7 million homes throughout Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., as well as parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic is the official sports network of the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, D.C. United, Atlantic Coast Conference, and Colonial Athletic Association.
With several collegiate and professional sports seasons set to begin, it was critical that the upgrade be completed on time. Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI), a broadcast and multimedia systems integrator in Newington, Va., handled the design, installation, and overall project management. Beyond the new studio cameras and lenses, CEI upgraded the production control room and two master control rooms, plus the equipment core area, transmission system, and edit suites.

“CEI has enabled us to deliver all of our news and entertainment shows to our viewers in HD,” said Steve Weber, director of engineering for Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic. “Our new Fujinon lenses are an important part of the upgraded look of our network. They really deliver outstanding images of our studio programming.”

Part of the ZA Select Series, the ZA17X7.6BERM is an ENG-style HD lens with 17x zoom and 2x extender. Its DigiPower digital servo control system offers improved accuracy and repeatability, as well as custom control parameters for individual camera operator preferences. In addition, its built-in QuickZoom feature provides a rapid zoom movement to the telephoto position to check focus with the push of a button, then returns the lens to the previously selected zoom position when the button is released.

JVC AND TELECAST FIBER SYSTEMS UNVEIL COPPERHEAD PROHD KA-F790 FIBER OPTIC TRANSCEIVER FOR JVC GY-HM790 PROHD CAMCORDER

Telecast Fiber Systems and JVC Professional Products, a division of JVC U.S.A., today unveiled the CopperHead™ ProHD KA-F790 camera-mounted fiber optic transceiver at IBC2010 in Amsterdam. Built exclusively for the JVC GY-HM790 ProHD camera, it is the first CopperHead to provide a direct connection to a camcorder without requiring external cables. The new KA-F790 will be demonstrated at IBC through Sept. 14 by JVC Professional Europe Ltd. (Booth 10.D41).

Using a 68-pin connector on the back of the GY-HM790, the compact KA-F790 attaches directly to the camera body and enables broadcasters to leverage the GY-HM790’s full studio functionality in the field. It connects the camera via SMPTE hybrid (powered) or tactical (unpowered) fiber optic cable to a truck, control room, or “video village” position.

The system simultaneously transports bidirectional digital (SDI or HD-SDI) and analog (NTSC or PAL) video, as well as all two-way camera control, audio, video, data, sync, tally/call, prompter, and intercom signals between the camera head and the remote CopperHead Base Station. The lightweight, 1 RU Base Station is easily integrated into any studio, mobile truck, or portable flypack – and plugs directly into a facility's switcher, router, intercom, and house sync systems.

“Since its unveiling at this year’s NAB show, the GY-HM790 has received rave reviews for excellent HD image quality as well as its versatility for both studio and ENG use,” said Steve DeFrancesco, vice president and general manager of Telecast Fiber Systems. “And now, our new CopperHead ProHD KA-F790 makes it easy and seamless for GY-HM790 users to leverage the range, quality, and reliability of fiber for their remote productions.”

“With the CopperHead ProHD systems from Telecast Fiber Systems, GY-HM790 users can have the convenience and performance of fiber on location,” said Lon Mass, vice president of sales and marketing, JVC Professional Products. “The customized KA-F790 transceiver fits directly on the camera, which provides an elegant, reliable, and streamlined fiber optic solution.”

The CopperHead ProHD systems will be available in November. In the United States, it will be sold by JVC Professional Products as a complete package (camera module and base station), with different configurations to support Clear-Com and RTS intercom systems.

Video Quality and Flexibility Power Envivio’s IBC 2010 Three Screen Demos, Drive TV without Boundaries

Envivio, the leading provider of live and on-demand multi-screen video processing solutions, will highlight the latest versions of its enhanced Three Screen video headends at IBC 2010, Stand 1.D72, including live demonstrations of complete, ready-to-deploy solutions for delivering live and on-demand services over mobile, IPTV and Internet. Envivio will showcase the compelling solutions that are driving growth for TV service providers, including a demonstration of full HD 3D TV using MVC encoding, advanced network-based On Demand applications, and feature-rich over the top delivery of premium content.

“Delivering content over a variety of networks to multiple screens is just the first step toward building services that consumer value,” said Boris Felts, VP of marketing at Envivio. “Envivio is showing IBC visitors how to apply the excellent video quality and industry-leading efficiency of our headends to create engaging services that are optimized for each delivery method. Only Envivio meets every requirement from a single encoding platform, meaning that service providers can easily adapt their existing infrastructure as needed to take advantage of growth and revenue opportunity.”

Among the highlights visitors will experience in IBC Stand 1.D72 are:

New 4Caster™ C42 upgrade A significant firmware upgrade for Envivio’s Three Screens video encoder, this is the industry’s first broadcast-class encoding solution to unify support for the leading IPTV, Mobile and Internet TV video formats into a single software platform. This upgrade will have particular impact on:

1) Service providers: A unified platform enables service providers to streamline their headend operations by pre-processing a source once, rather than multiple times based on the number of services they deliver.

2) Content providers: Now a single encoder can optimize streams for multiple target delivery platforms, instead of needing separate encoders for each target platform.

Multi-screen headend demonstration Envivio’s comprehensive headend demonstration will illustrate delivery of top quality video services to multiple screens simultaneously, including:

1) IPTV using Envivio Extreme™ H.264 compression to deliver high quality HD video below 4 Mbps, giving service providers the flexibility to add more HD channels, increase the quality of their premium HD services, and/or to extend the reach of their network to make service available to more subscribers over greater distances.

2) Over the Top content distribution enabling premium TV services delivered over the Internet via existing broadband networks. Sophisticated features including Envivio Extreme™ compression and support for the latest adaptive streaming technologies including Adobe Flash, Apple HTTP Live Streaming and Microsoft Silverlight ensure consistent delivery and excellent quality of experience on all of today’s most popular devices. Full compatibility with leading CDN providers and DRM platforms, as well support for ad insertion, creates a complete solution for ensuring revenue-generation.

3) Mobile TV using all broadcast standards as well streaming live and on demand video over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks to the latest generation iPhone and iPad, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices.

Envivio On Demand
Envivio’s network-based On Demand solution enables operators to turn any content recorded by a subscriber, on their PVR, into assets for subsequent delivery to the subscriber’s mobile and PC screens. Installed entirely within the network at the headend, Envivio On Demand adds no consumer premise costs for operators and fully integrates with existing content management systems. Envivio On Demand takes full advantage of Envivio Three Screens encoders to deliver the best video quality possible over networks that lack QoS.

3D Stereoscopic TV using AVC and MVC Compression
Envivio 4Caster C42 has the flexible and performance to support advances such as frame compatible AVC or Service compatible MVC encoding of 3D stereoscopic video. Envivio will showcase the delivery of full 1080p 3D MVC streams, providing the highest quality 3D viewing experience on 3DTV.

Envivio Powers Innovation throughout IBC
Envivio solutions will be used throughout the IBC show floor to power unique content delivery demonstrations from some of the leading names in the industry, including: Airties Wireless Networks (5.B41), Ericsson (1.D61), Microsoft (Topaz Lounge), Netgem (9.405), ST Micro (1.E36), Teamcast (2.B51) and Verimatrix (4.B84).

Aviso a escépticos.

Brainstorm Multimedia Announces Real-time Graphics Control via Apple iPad App

Industry-leading real-time 3D interactive graphics and virtual studio provider Brainstorm Multimedia today announced the seamless integration of Brainstorm's Aston 7 character generator with the Apple iPad in a live studio environment for Ireland's TV3.

According to Brainstorm CEO Ricardo Montesa, "TV3 wanted to enable its sports presenters to control and maneuver virtual players within a graphical environment - live from the studio - for their 2010 Gaelic Games Championships. They also wanted the ability to log and display individual player statistics for real-time graphic playout."

DC2 Media Ltd in the UK was contracted to provide the graphics system and selected Brainstorm's Aston 7 character generator for its fully integrated Data Pools functionality running on Brainstorm's powerful real-time 3D "eStudio" graphics engine. DC2 Media also settled on the new Apple iPad as the studio interface when it was determined that it was possible to create a simple, intuitive user interface that was easy to use by the talent during live commentary.

DC2 Media worked with Piranha Graphics to design what is believed to be the first-ever iPad application designed to control a real-time 3D graphics engine. The application's look and feel mirrored the on-air virtual graphic look, ensuring it was intuitive for the presenters controlling it.

Comprehensive pre-implementation testing also established that Apple's iPad was not only capable of handling Aston 7's live data to display smooth virtual player moves, but could effortlessly depict as many as 30 player moves simultaneously, all in real time.

The Aston 7 Data Pools protocol is renowned for enabling the automatic look up and reception of large volumes of data in real-time. The Data Pools protocol also allows applications created using Brainstorm's free SDK to trigger animations and control page taking. The iPad app is one of what are believed to be numerous new applications that can be developed to run on the platform.

According to DC2 Media Managing Director David Connaughton, "For the duration of the Championships we stationed three data collators in the outside broadcast truck to log player statistics on tablet PCs. Thanks to the Aston Data Pools protocol, the instant a statistic is logged it is available for playout."

Connaughton added, "The Aston 7 along with the iPad app enables us to deliver a very dynamic analytical graphics-based tool for TV3's coverage of the Championships. In fact, TV3 said it added a new and highly compelling element to its coverage due to the ability to graphically illustrate multiple moves and tactics being discussed live by presenters in the studio."

Presenters were almost instantly using the iPad application to highlight, substitute, move players, and display attack and defence formations, all of which were recreated on the live playout system in real-time by the Aston 7 graphics engine.

In order to interchange shots of talent controlling the iPad application with live virtual graphics, the directors also asked DC2 Media to provide a delay that would wait to launch the virtual graphics until the talent's finger left the iPad screen, thereby maximizing the impact of live effects.
Brainstorm's Montesa added, "The Aston 7-iPad combination has generated considerable interest and DC2 Media has already been commissioned to deploy the application for horse-racing at RTE Ireland. We expect further developments along these lines as this important development gains wider exposure."

Javeriana University allies with VSN for the deployment of Centro Ático

The Pontificia Javeriana University in Bogotá (Colombia) has recently opened its new Centro Ático center, a promoter of research on media projects and an educational and practicum center for the new TV broadcasting professionals in Colombia and the rest of the world. Centro Ático implements one of the latest media technology systems for learning development in the areas of image, sound and design.

The Pontificia Javeriana University trusted VSN in order to ensure a perfect integration of the entire system, which, aimed to promote the students' creativity concerning media production, must be ready to work in multiplatform environments, different HD video formats and various sources (professional cameras, cell phones, internet, etc.) More than 1,000 students will be using this infrastructure on a daily basis.

The Spanish manufacturer's media asset management solution is the key of the project; a solution which was completely customized and adapted to meet Centro Ático's requirements.

VSN's MAM will be the integration nexus of all production and post-production systems from different manufacturers (Autodesk Smoke, Sony Vegas, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer and Pro-tools, etc.).
The infrastructure is ready to support more than 450 clients in a collaborative work environment, multiplatform (Windows/Mac OS) and managed through a credentials system for students' log-on. The main working format is XDCAM HD 50Mbps. Built on a gigabit ethernet mixed infrastructure, the core of the system is a high-performance data storage unit of more than 60TB from DataDirect Networks, partnering VSN in this project, which guarantees the required bandwidth in an installation with such dimensions and complexity. The other subsystems will communicate with DDN for global access to contents.
The MAM supplied by VSN is the result of the R&D project called Spider, absolutely necessary to meet all workflow customization specific needs, hierarchical permission systems, multiformat environment and ability to integrate with the systems of all the manufacturers involved. This solution guarantees Centro Ático the scalability and possibility to add other solutions to the infrastructure in the future. The contract also includes the installation of a complete news production system vsnnewsfor the students' practicum in a real environment. This solution is the same several TV stations in the region are employing to produce their live shows.
Concerning technology selection, César Tulio Ossa, Director of Centro Ático, emphasized: "VSN has been the only provider able to face the complex requisites of the project, guaranteeing a complete integration of the different systems involved while maintaining the robustness and reliability of the technical deployment at a reasonable cost."
VSN also supplies the project with a long list of references in educational centers. UNIACC in Chile, East Coast Media in the United Kingdom, the universities of Seville, Burgos and Camilo José Cela in Spain and the Porto Institute of Technology in Portugal, among others, are using VSN solutions for media content management and media production.
